English as a Second Language

Do you want to improve your English language skills? Duluth Adult Education offers classes for all English Language Learners who want to improve their English language skills. We welcome students of all levels.

We focus on building vocabulary and conversation skills through a variety of speaking, reading, listening, and writing activities.

Class features conversation practice with classmates and volunteers. Typical activities are vocabulary matching, dialogue completion, fill-in-the-blank exercises, pattern recognition, dialogue practice, and small group work. Grammar targets are chosen based on individual students’ needs.

DAE Classes include:

Beginning ESL

Learners work on survival English for community interaction and entry-level employment, as well as basic familiarity with life in the United States. Survival English topics include transportation, housing, shopping, community resources, health care, employment, and digital literacy.

Intermediate ESL

Participants build on the above-mentioned survival English skills, with an emphasis on work readiness for entry-level employment and higher-level vocabulary acquisition. Students are encouraged to develop an awareness of current events. In addition to small group and partner practice, learners may engage in directed role play and brief presentations of written work.

Advanced ESL

Learners preparing for higher education and the reading demands of everyday employment benefit from activities such as class discussions, grammar review, vocabulary study, dialogue practice, and paragraph writing in order to improve reading comprehension and writing skills.

U.S. Citizenship preparation is also available upon request.
