Duluth Adult Education has two options for anyone needing to complete high school: our GED preparation program and earning an adult diploma through Duluth Public Schools.
GED
What is the GED?
GED stands for General Education Development. It is a general knowledge test that can be taken in place of earning a high school diploma. The GED is accepted at nearly all colleges in the U.S., as well as many employers.
The GED consists of 4 tests that measure knowledge of Reading/Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science. When all four tests have been passed, the certification can be used in place of a high school diploma.
How can Duluth Adult Education help me get a GED?
We offer preparation classes and tutoring for the GED test, both online and in person. Students work at their own pace with the help and guidance of a qualified instructor. DAE provides study materials and resources to help, all at no cost to the student. We have both online and paper-based resources so students can study in whatever way is most accessible to them. We also provide space to take the GED tests once the student is ready.
Requirements:
- Students 19 and older are immediately eligible. Complete Step 1 online registration below.
- 18 year old students, who are not required to be enrolled in any school in the K-12 system, may apply for an age waiver. The age waiver requires qualifying scores on a reading and math assessment and logging a minimum of 12 hours of studying time per test. Complete Step 1 online registration below and someone will contact you to let you know the next step.
- 17 year old students should check in with ALC to see if they can do credit recovery. If ALC decides GED is the best option, ALC will complete an age waiver form and submit it to the state. Students can contact ALC at 218-336-8756. Once the age waiver is approved, students can register to be a student in our program to study for the GED.
Adult Diploma
What is an adult diploma, and how does it differ from a GED?
The adult diploma program at DAE is a standards based, competency diploma program. It differs from the GED in that ISD 709 issues an actual high school diploma upon completion. This program is ideal for students who only had a few credits remaining in order to complete their high school diploma. We will need transcripts from all of the high schools that you previously attended.
How can Duluth Adult Education help me get an adult diploma?
A qualified teacher at DAE will review your previous high school transcripts, determine how many credits are remaining, and will create equivalent coursework for you to complete the needed credits. Earning an adult diploma can be done in the classroom, on your own time at home, even online.
Requirements:
- Students must be at least 21 years old.
- Students must take a placement test for reading and math.
Students must have no more than five (5) credits remaining to complete their high school diploma, determined through an evaluation of high school credits. We can assist you in obtaining the transcripts.
